Walk with Us to Cure Lupus

As I have been saying, I am doing the Lupus Walk fundraiser again this year. Woohoo!

For all my knitterly friends, I am having a thank you drawing. For every $5 you donate to the walk, I will put your name in a hat and draw for some FABULOUS prizes!!!! Those Prizes will be posted here over the coming weeks. So far there is fiber, jewelry, sock blockers, project bags! I am so excited to be able to do this for everyone as a thank you for helping me work to find a cure - because lupus sucks!!!! Seriously.

So, go to my Lupus Walk page and click on Make a Gift! In the comments, put podcast or blog or something that tells me you came from here (cause I have family and friends who don't care a bit about getting fun stuff (shocking I KNOW!!!!) so I am not including those non-knitting souls in the fun (more for you!!!!!!!!!)

My goal this year is to raise $5000. I think that is totally doable. The walk is on October 6. All donations must be received by then.

Now...for the first prize that was donated and you could win...These are the Turtle Daddy Sock Blockers available at Turtlegirl76's etsy shop. The pictured pair are the large women's/medium men's, however I am not entirely sure which size/color combo is being donated - we chatted about it this weekend, but never settled on it because, well, we were busy buying yarn!!!

I chose this particular color/size to show them off though, because I happened to paint this pair. That's right. This fairie also paints sock blockers (in exhange for vodka and stitch markers - I am easy, what can I say???)

So - go check out what else Cristi has to offer and stay tuned for more items to come!!!

Some Lupus facts:

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissue.

Lupus can cause life-threatening damage to major organs such as the kidneys, lungs, heart and central nervous system.

Lupus is the leading cause of death among women with autoimmune diseases who are in their childbearing years (ages 15-45).

Women are five times more likely to die from lupus than men, and African Americans are three times more likely to die from lupus than caucasians.

That's right, folks, LUPUS KILLS!!! Yeah, I look fine right now, but I hurt and this stupid disease kills! Help me find a cure!!!

We'll go with "the pick of whatever sizes happen to be available at the time of the drawing"

Keeping in mind that I spoke with Turtle Daddy this morning and got him working on some smaller sizes. Whether or not I receive them within the next month I don't know.

I've been tested for Lupus for years. It's funny because something always shows up, but nothing definitive. I only recently saw something about a walk . . I'm going to see if there's one up here. If not, I'll definitely back!

I donated and hey, it feels great! Best wishes for your goal.

It's great that you're doing this. I found your blog on Ravelry! I have two auto-immune diseases (Crohn's and Ankylosing Spondylitis), and I know how it can be. I've been tested for lupus a couple of times, but so far I've been lucky there. I wish you well! I made a donation for you. Good luck!

Oops, lost half my comment!

Some years ago, I was diagnosed with Lupus. After several years of negative results on the same tests - and a lot of different doctors - it seems I don't have it after all. But I did a lot of research about it at the time, and my heart goes out to you. All the best to you!

Aimee - it's great that you're doing the walk - I would donate to you, but it'd be a conflict of interest as I work for the ALR...so good luck! I look forward to seeing checks from knitters as they come in for you (I'm the check checker-person)- I've noted your ID:-)

Glad another knitter is walking!

Now THIS is a wonderful contest. I haven't donated yet either but plan to when I get to my wallet! I actually heard about this through a new knitting contest blog that I guess just got started - "Win It" http://wiknit.blogspot.com/ It's actually kinda a cool idea.

Good luck with the walk this weekend!

My experience with Lupus is not a human one.....my dog was diagnosed with Symmetrical Lupoid Onchodystrophy in May. It is a form of Lupus that effects the claws.

So, while my touch with Lupus is in the doggie form, I wish you all of the best......and send my donation. Hope you reach your goal!!

Hi there I just wanted to let you know I donated (I'm 'erqsome' in the blogroll) after listening to your podcast, but I forgot to leave a comment on the Lupus site for you.

I've been a fairly longtime listener and have found your passion to this cause remarkable. I hope you reach your goal!

All the best x

Like others, I've been tested for Lupus a number of times, and I've been fortunate in my negative results - but I know the pain and frustration of a disease that flares and remits, and I hope with all my heart that your remission holds.

I donated in a multiple of $18 - Chai, in Jewish tradition - for life!

best - teabird (from Ravelry)

Hi Aimee!

I found you via Sheri's blog at The Loopy Ewe. I'm happystasher on Ravelry. I'd love to sponsor you for the walk because I have Lupus. I'm 40 now and I was diagnosed at 33. At the time I was presentling 11 symptoms and I have kidney involvement that flares up periodically. I consider myself in remission though I'm not sure if I am technically. Please feel free to message me on Ravelry -- would love to converse with you! What's the best way to get my check to you in time?? Do you have Paypal?? Let me know. Thank you for doing this virtual walk!

My mom died from lupus back in the 60's. I was only 8. I still miss her wildly and I would have liked to have known her as a person. May this never happen to another child or parent.

You made a few good points there. I did a search on the subject and hardly found any specific details on other sites, but then happy to be here, seriously, appreciate that.
